Control Strategy for MVDC to LVDC Modular Quadruple-Active-Bridge Converter Station

As the electric vehicle market expands, demand for charging stations is rising accordingly. Fast charging stations transfer power from a medium voltage dc bus and convert it to low voltage dc for vehicle charging. In this context, high power medium-voltage dc to low-voltage dc converters are increasingly needed. Such converter stations must not only deliver high capacity but also support flexible power transfer to enhance grid stability with bipolar voltage levels. To meet these requirements, a quadruple-active-bridge converter can be employed. In previous studies, the voltage control of a single quadruple-active-bridge converter has been widely investigated. However, control strategies for converter stations with an input-series output-parallel architecture have not been extensively investigated. This paper proposes a control method for a quadruple-active-bridge based converter station and presents the corresponding station architecture. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated experimentally using a 240kW converter station prototype.
