Consumer Perception, Understanding and behavioral Intention Towards Nutrition Labels: Focusing on the 2016 Revision

초록

Nutrition labels on food packages are among the most prominent and population-based policy measures associated with diet and health promotion. In 2016, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety revised food labeling standards, including nutrition labels, to improve consumers’ understanding and use of labels. This study has two objectives. The first objective is to examine the effects of the revised nutrition label, in effect since 2018. Did it improve consumers’ understanding of, perception of, and intention to use the label? The second objective is to support future revisions to promote user-friendliness and enhance usability. We therefore proposed and tested the effects of a multiple traffic light (MTL) label and a physical activity equivalent label when presenting calorie information. The results showed that the 2016 revision did improve consumers’ understanding of, perception of, and intention to use the label. In addition, the proposed MTL and physical activity equivalent label formats demonstrated positive effects on consumer understanding, attitude and efficiency. This study is important because it empirically tested the effects of revised nutrition label in addition to consumer-friendly formats of nutrition labels on consumer understanding, perception, and intention.
