초록
The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological effects of elite athletes' early sport study abroad experiences on post-retirement career transition and to inform decision-making for athletes and families considering overseas training. Using narrative inquiry, six retired elite athletes (three football, three golf) who had studied abroad for more than two years during adolescence participated in in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using Spradley's structured procedures. Findings showed that early study abroad functioned not only as technical development but as a developmental turning point shaping identity formation, self-regulation, cultural capital, and psychological resilience. At the same time, language barriers, cultural isolation, financial strain, and expectation-performance gaps contributed to psychological distress and burnout. In career transition, golfers internalized these experiences into coaching philosophy and professional identity, whereas footballers utilized linguistic and international competencies to diversify vocational pathways. Early sport study abroad thus represents a critical life transition beyond skill acquisition, highlighting the need for psychological readiness assessment and structured support during return and retirement phases.
