초록
This study investigates the reactivity and microstructural influence of a silicon-based water repellent, classified within the silane-siloxane group, when applied to the surface of reinforced concrete (RC). Surface applications of water repellents are known to enhance durability by limiting the ingress of moisture, chloride ions, and carbon dioxide. The experimental program focused on evaluating the material’s interaction with concrete and its effectiveness in forming a protective barrier. To analyze these effects, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to observe microstructural changes, while Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) was employed to assess variations in pore structure. The results provide insights into the potential of silicon-based agents for improving the long-term performance of RC structures under environmental exposure. According to the SEM analysis, the untreated concrete exhibited visible hydration products and pores, whereas the concrete treated with the water repellent showed a waxlike coating on the surface of the hydration products. The MIP porosity analysis revealed that the untreated concrete had a porosity of approximately 6.8%, while the concrete treated with the water repellent showed a significantly reduced porosity of about 2.6%. This reduction is attributed to the penetration of the water repellent into the concrete, resulting in the coating of hydration product surfaces.
