Enhancement of CO2 Loading Capacity by Zinc Chloride and MDEA Treatment of Softwood Biochar: Aiming to Apply Inside Concrete

초록

The global challenge of climate change and carbon emissions has placed carbon dioxide (CO2) capture technologies at the forefront of research aimed at mitigating global warming. Biochar, a porous carbon material, has garnered significant attention due to its promising CO2 adsorption capabilities and economic advantages. However, the adsorption performance of biochar is largely influenced by its structural and chemical properties, necessitating chemical modifications to enhance its effectiveness. In this study, soft wood biochar was treated with zinc chloride (ZnCl2) and an amine-based compound, MDEA (CH3N(C2H4OH)2), to evaluate the potential improvement in CO2 adsorption performance. Additionally, the CO2 adsorption performance of cement mortar incorporating modified biochar was analyzed to explore its applicability in CO2 reduction technologies for cementitious materials. Experimental results demonstrated that ZnCl2-treated biochar (S500ZC) exhibited smaller and more densely packed pore structures, thereby increasing surface area. FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of N-H bonds in MDEA-treated biochar (S500M), indicating enhanced CO2 adsorption potential due to the introduction of amine functional groups. These findings suggest that chemical treatment of biochar with ZnCl2 and MDEA can effectively enhance CO2 adsorption, offering valuable insights for future applications in developing CO2-absorbing concrete materials.
