초록
Considering recent increase in shark bycatch in Korea, there is growing attention about how shark presence shifts ecological functions in marine environments. Stable isotopes are valuable tools for interpreting and understanding trophic ecology of marine predators. To date, no studies have applied stable isotope techniques for understanding the ecology of cartilaginous fishes, shark, in Korea. In this review, we aim to support researchers in overviewing strengths and methodological considerations of stable isotope analysis associated with the specific isotopic features of sharks. First, we overview stable isotope techniques for the ecological study of sharks by (1) elucidating consumer-prey relations and ecological niche, (2) identifying dominant prey species as its diet, (3) understanding the drivers of their movement and habitat use patterns of sharks across marine ecosystems, and (4) estimating the shark specified trophic position and the ecological functioning in marine food webs. When combined with other ecological tools such as stomach content analysis, genetic techniques, and biochemical markers, stable isotope analysis can serve as a powerful method for addressing fundamental questions in shark ecology.
