애니메이션 캐릭터 성격유형에 따른 동작 연출 -월트디즈니 장편 애니메이션들을 중심으로-

Motion is essential for audiences to understand the story of animation and character’s psychology. This study aims at explaining the motion aspects of characters in Disney feature animation through Laban Movement Analysis (LMA), and helping to create smooth motion directing that fit the character’s personality. As a research method, first, the protagonist and the antagonist from a total of five Walt Disney animated films, 〈Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs〉, 〈Cinderella〉, 〈Beauty and the Beast〉 and 〈Frozen 2〉 were selected. Second, the character’s gestures (motion shape, motion range) and tempo (motion tempo) were analyzed. Whether the motion shape was straight or curved, the motion range was free, or suppressed, each was analyzed through image comparison. In order to analyze the motion tempo of the characters, the motion speed in a similar situation for each character was calculated in units of frames and converted in seconds. Third, the motion shape, motion range, and motion tempo analyzed for each character were analyzed by applying the “Effort-Shape theory” of the Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) theory. Fourth, the analysis results were aggregated to find out the behavioral patterns according to the personality of the antagonist and the protagonist. The analysis, showed that the gestures and tempo of the antagonist tended to be free and strong, and the tempo of motion was fast. Applying these to the Effort-Shape theory, the average motion pattern was ‘free’, ‘heavy’, ‘sudden(fast)’, ‘direct(straight)’, ‘straight or curved’, ‘smooth, artistic’. On the other hand, the gestures and tempo of the protagonist tended to be limited and light, and showed a slow motion tempo. Applying these to the Effort-Shape theory, the average motion pattern was ‘repressed’, ‘light, ‘persistent(slow)’, ‘indirect(circumferential)’, ‘narrowing or widening’, ‘smooth, artistic’. This work uses the Effort-Shape theory of Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) to identify behavioral aspects that vary depending on the character’s personality. Thus, it was concluded that Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) and the data in this study were an effective tool to the character’s motion directing.
