A Qualitative Study on the Occupational Image of Street Dancers Perceived by Prospective Majors

초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the occupational image of street dancers as perceived by prospective majors and to analyze its impact on their career choices and planning. To this end, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with seven middle school students, and the data were analyzed using directional content analysis. To ensure research rigor, the criteria of Lincoln and Guba (1985) were strictly followed. The findings are as follows. First, the occupational image of street dancers exhibited ambivalence across six factors. While public reputation and social recognition were positive due to media influence, concerns regarding economic instability and injury risks coexisted in terms of compensation. Expertise was perceived as a multidimensional competence, and the work environment was characterized by high autonomy contrasted with limited time flexibility. Second, this image influenced career paths through two distinct patterns: ‘immediate action’ driven by self-concept implementation and ‘strategic reservation’ considering practical constraints. This study demonstrates that middle school pre-dancers actively explore their career paths by maintaining complex and multilayered perceptions of the occupational image. These results provide foundational data for career counseling in the arts and expand the academic horizons of qualitative research on occupational images.
