초록
The purpose of this paper is to explore the multimodal storytelling strategies of the television series Yumi's Cells . This TV series can be evaluated as a successful and active use of multimodal storytelling. Through the effective fusion of live action and 3D animation, it breaks the boundaries between actual behavior and psychological representation. It can be said that this is a work that fully realises multimodal storytelling and opens up the possibility of exploring new storytelling possibilities. Based on the theory of multimodal storytelling, this paper analyzes the collaborative mechanism between various mode resources, including language, vision, animation, sound and spatial configuration. In particular, the compositional approach centered on 1) the juxtaposed structure of the real world and the inner world, and 2) the rhythm of emotional change is examined. As a result, Yumi's Cells was found to be constructing a highly structured emotion-centered storytelling system through anthropomorphic cell animation and cross-references to real-life situations. The rhythm of emotional change generally follows a four-stage logic of “preliminary preparation-stimulus trigger-peak-recovery transition”, and a strong structure of emotional amplitude is formed through the synergy of various modes such as colors, sound, and editing rhythms. In addition, there is a high degree of consistency between different emotional types and their corresponding mode configurations, reflecting the systematic linkage mechanism of “emotion type–mode combination–perceptual pathway”. This paper argues that Yumi’s Cells is not merely a visual adaptation of the original webtoon, but rather effectively reconstructs psychological mechanisms through visualization, pacing, and structuring, thereby exploring new ways of emotionally driven storytelling.
