Urban Building Energy Modeling Challenges: Evaluating Zoning Approaches and Window Impacts on Energy Consumption

Urban building energy modeling (UBEM) is an effective tool for analyzing energy flows at the city scale. However, the modeling of UBEM tends to be more simplified than actual buildings, which limits its ability to accurately reflect the thermal performance of the actual buildings. This study analyzed the three thermal zoning methods of Single zoning, Core/perimeter zoning, and K-cluster zoning developed in this study, and the effect of windows on the energy simulation results of UBEM. As a result, the K-cluster zoning method predicted the total energy consumption to be 37.19% lower than that of the Core/perimeter zoning, and showed the lowest error rate from the actual data. In addition, the presence or absence of windows showed a difference of at least 4.23% up to 19.22% in the total energy consumption. This study showed that there are significant differences in the energy results depending on the modeling of UBEM, indicating that in the future, prediction accuracy improvement and UBEM calibration methods are needed. © 2025 Building Simulation Conference Proceedings.
