The Effect of Acquiring HIV/AIDS Information through Different Television Programs on AIDS Knowledge and AIDS Stigma : The Moderating Role of AIDS Education

초록

The present study explored whether receiving information from different program genres (i.e., news vs. campaign vs. entertainment) influences AIDS knowledge, attitude toward people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), fear of contagion, stigma norm, and intention to stigmatize PLWHA. The study also examined if such influence is moderated by HIV/AIDS education. An analysis of the data collected from 1,000 Korean respondents revealed the following results. First. people who had acquired HIV/AIDS information from television media possessed the greater level of AIDS knowledge and the lower level of AIDS stigma than the respondents who had never acquired HIV/AIDS information through television. Second, receiving HIV/AIDS education significantly lowered people’s AIDS stigma but did not enhance their AIDS knowledge. Third, the genres of television programs had partially significant impacts on people’s AIDS knowledge and stigma; entertainment programs were more effective in reducing AIDS stigma than campaigns or news programs. Fourth, the effects of television programs on AIDS knowledge and AIDS stigma were partly moderated by respondents’ experience of HIV/AIDS education.
