Butsumyo(物名) and Korinshuchi(交隣須知), Korean Language Textbooks in Edo Period

초록

This paper aims to illuminate the mutual response relationship between Korinshuchi (交隣須知), a Korean language study book in the Edo period, and Butsumyo (物名), a Korean lexicon compiled using it, and, in doing so, to reconstruct the production process of Butsumyo (物名). The result suggests that the existing Butsumyo (物名) is produced based on a new supplementary version of Korinshuchi (交隣須知), which is a further supplementation of the existing Shirozubon (the Shirozu edition) or Nagasakibon (the Nagasaki edition) of Korinshuchi (交隣須知). In addition, while Korinshuchi (交隣須知) is used as a Korean language textbook, it only contains the Korean text in Hangul accompanied by Japanese translations. This would have created a problem in learning Korean pronunciation. The existence of Butsumyo (物名), which collects Korean words from Korinshuchi (交隣須知) and records the pronunciation in Katakana (片仮名), may have been the result of an attempt to partially resolve such a problem. Accordingly, the value of Butsumyo (物 名) as a Korean language textbook should be reexamined.
