전통의 발견과 국학의 탄생 - 조지훈 학문 세계의 해석 원리와 지적 형상을 중심으로

Jo Ji-Hoon’s academic world is categorized as Koreanology. But it includes history, philosophy, religion, literature, language, anthropology, geography, and folklore. In this perspective the difference among those studies should be alive in the category and they should be embraced in the total scope for the identity of Koreanology. Therefore his academic writings are to be read in order to find the flow or logic throughout the whole. The flow is found in his writings as four levels. The first is origin and birth, the second is being and generation, the third is moderation and hybrid, and the fourth is the spirit and life. His academic world was born based on those four meanings. The history, philosophy, religion, literature, language, anthropology, geography, and folklore in the category, Koreanology, include the four meanings basically. As the world is mediated by those studies, the total Koreanology can maintain its own identity. Of course the four levels are not included equally in all the studies. Some of them can be prominent or not by the characteristic of the study. Also some of them can be in the depth or the surface. For example, in his studies the approach with etymology and search for the human origin like shamanism are the prominent in the first level, origin and birth. The process of describing cultural history is also outstanding in the second level, being and generation. And the explanatory note on ‘Chaegeundam’, interpretation on ‘Joohae’, ‘Donghak’, and ‘Unified Silla’, and the attitude on the aesthetic category such as ‘beauty’ are also prominent in the third level, moderation and hybrid. Finally the ‘Jijoron’, and ‘theory of poetry(literature)’ are outstanding in the fourth level, spirit and life. As the four levels as a flow or logic is across all his writings, the Koreanology as a vast academic system can be born. The four levels intersect each other again and again in his writings. And they show his attitude on the world and the method how he understands and judges. It reflects his consciousness and unconsciousness as the whole. His various and vast argument on the Koreanology is developed within the flow or logic of the four levels. It proposes a specific direction and sustainable scope above simple and sporadic levels. What the direction and sustainable scope of Koreanology is specifically, that he proposes, is revealed only if how the flow of four levels are realized in his writings are proved through each studies or the studies’ lower categories. This article aims at figuring out the whole aspect of his Koreanology based on the facts found such above and reviewing how it has universal validity has as Koreanology.
