Is Sowol (素月) a folk poet? This study first refutes this question. Sowol's poetry is very different from the Western trend pursued by other poets of the same era, and it seems to be the result defined by poets who wrote modern poetry according to the traditional tune. However, Sowol's poetic destination never existed. The work titled “Cricket (귀뚜라미)” is a sophisticated example that combines the central message with a metaphorical method. Sowol is not a folk song poem, but a poem. Cho Yunje (趙潤濟) saw that Sowol was not a poet who occupies a large proportion in the development of literary history, and folk poets fixed their gaze on Sowol after Cho. By contrast, Chang Deoksun (張德順) is evaluated as a self-aware, representative lyric, and outstanding poet. He has completely changed from Cho. Furthermore, Cho Dongil (趙東一) evaluated that the poem was “received for a long time and is highly regarded and revered as a poet of the nation.” It is a reversal of literary history. Now, Sowol is at a crossroads of full-fledged evaluation. In terms of methodology, classical literature is in a more advantageous position in terms of extensive and detailed proof. In “Autillo (접동새),” for example, Du-Gyeon becomes a sister in Sowol's poem in a long flow of literary history. Sowol compiled his poems on the level of private history; therefore, a classical literary approach is needed to read Sowol. A need exists to move away from defining Sowol as a simple folk poet and actively and objectively organize his values. In “No Heart (無心),” the pain of living in a marriage is expressed through a poetic mechanism that differs from that in traditional folk songs. Sowol's research will produce new results when the point where classical and modern literature meet as momentum.
