Standardization of Body Weight in Korean Adults Using Allometric Scaling: An Examination of Gender-Specific Applicability

초록

ults regardless of sex and applied allometric scaling to derive a more appropriate weight standardization index. Data were obtained from 833,619 participants (457,474 men and 376,145 women) in the Korea National Fitness Award 100 program between August 2015 and July 2024 after excluding outliers. Correlation analysis between BMI and height showed near independence among men (r= -.003, p< .001), whereas a negative correlation was observed among women (r= -.235, p< .05). Simple regressions of ln(height) on ln(weight) yielded allometric exponents of 1.980 for men and 1.057 for women. The corresponding body weight standardization indices, kg/m1.980 for men and kg/m1.057 for women, were most independent of height (men r= .002, women r= .001). For comparison, male BMI (kg/m2) showed r= -.003, and female Simple Weight Ratio (SWR, kg/m) showed r= .016, both indicating negligible effect sizes. Overall, the weight-height relationship followed distinct sex-specific allometric patterns, with optimal exponents approximating m2 for men and m1 for women. Considering computational convenience, BMI for men and SWR for women can be used as primary indices in field settings, while sex-specific allometric indices are recommended as supplementary measures for detailed analyses or research purposes. This study established height independence as the primary criterion for evaluating weight standardization indices. Future research should assess their predictive validity for metabolic syndrome and other health outcomes, and determine clinical cut-off values using the Youden index.
