.In this study, a flexible acoustic emission (AE) sensor based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with a multilayer structure was designed and fabricated. The sensor consists of a PVDF film core with silver electrode layers, flexible epoxy resin, and a polyimide protective layer, all structured to ensure both mechanical flexibility and AE sensitivity. Quantitative calibration was performed according to international standards International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 12713 and ISO 12714, and the frequency response characteristics were analyzed using fast Fourier transform (FFT). The absolute sensitivity was evaluated through comparison with a reference sensor, while dynamic performance was validated through repetitive pencil lead break (PLB) tests. This research highlights the feasibility of implementing a cost-effective AE sensor with superior adaptability compared to conventional PZT-based sensors, as well as its potential for application in precision process monitoring and structural health diagnosis systems. © 2001-2012 IEEE.
