초록

The Novel Steel Frame (NSF) methodology was suggested for seismic retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete (R/C) buildings in this research. The external connection methodology was proposed taking into account the complete behavior between existing R/C and reinforcement steel frames. The NSF technique can be used to perform seismic strengthening construction while residents continue to live within the building. The developed method is categorized as a strength increasing technique that can easily enhance the ultimate horizontal strength of R/C structures having shear failure mode. Two-story R/C frame specimens were designed on the basis of an existing Korean R/C building having non-seismic details; one control specimen and one specimen strengthened with the NSF system were used. Pseudodynamic testing was conducted to estimate the effects of seismic retrofitting in terms of the ultimate response strength, response displacement, and degree of earthquake damage compared with the control R/C frame. Experimental results showed that the proposed NSF retrofitting device, externally attached to the existing R/C frame, adequately enhanced the horizontal force, resulting in decreased earthquake response deformation of R/C frames under high level of earthquake ground motions. © 2021 by Korea Concrete Institute.
