30 Years of Establishment of Korean-Chinese Diplomatic Relations and North Korea-China Relationship: Evaluation and ProspectsThis article focused on North Korea-China relations among internal and external factors that influenced bilateral relations during the 30 years of diplomatic relations between Korea and China. First, North Korea-China relations repeated relaxation and recovery due to mutual strategic necessity, but efforts to stably 'manage' bilateral relations continued. Second, due to North Korea's successive nuclear and missile provocations and China's participation in international sanctions against North Korea, mutual "strategic distrust" remains. Third, since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China, the factors affecting North Korea-China relations are becoming more diverse and complicated. The future of North Korea-China relations will vary depending on whether these various internal and external influencing factors continue or change. In order to prepare for a new 30 years of Korea-China relations, it is necessary not only to respond to the risks posed by strengthening North Korea-China relations, but also to come up with measures to cooperate with South Korea to promote ‘change in North Korea’ in the mid- to long-term.
