쿠사마 야요이(Yayoi Kusama) 작품의 조형적 특징을 반영한 베딩제품디자인 개발연구

초록

With the constant development of the bedding product design, the consumers attach more and more importance to artistic design, applicability, personalized products and emotional satisfaction. The stylistic features of Yayoi Kusama's works with visual impact have been applied in multiple fields of product design to combine with the artistic values and practical functions. However, there is no case on application of his works in the design of bedding products. Hence, this study aims to reflect the modeling characteristics of Yayoi Kusama's works in the design of bedding products, provide the artistic values and propose the innovative design solution. The research scope was established based on previous studies (Shin Won-seon, 2016; Lee Jae-jeong, 2023; Yang Ga, 2023), selecting the formative characteristics of Yayoi Kusama's works specifically the morphological elements (point, line, plane) and color elements (hue, saturation, brightness) as the criteria for analysis. The target materials were set as cotton, known for its durability, breathability, and ease of pattern implementation, with Queen-sized beds chosen due to high consumer preference. Additionally, three design concepts reflecting Yayoi Kusama's morphological and color elements ‘Rhythm of Nature,’ ‘Flow of Nature,’ and ‘Resonance of Life’ were proposed to suggest innovative and artistically valuable bedding product designs. The research methods include the literature, network resources and investigation of internet data, to study and analyze the theoretical background of works of Yayoi Kusama and its product design cases. On such basis, Photoshop, Procreate and other design tools are applied to develop the design of innovative bedding products that integrate the formative characteristics of Yayoi Kusama and attach the artistic values. Firstly, the theme ‘Rhythm of Nature’ is inspired by the ‘point’ element and it combines flowers with balloon. The free, irregular and repeated dot pattern is applied in the white background and there are several colors, such as yellow, red, green, pink and blue, injecting the rhythm of life and visual vitality. Besides, the theme ‘Flow of Nature’ is inspired by characteristics of ‘line’. It integrates the natural elements, such as waves and running water, into design and creates the visual effect of fluidity and infinite expansion. Such design takes blue, green and yellow as the main colors and it symbolizes the rhythm of water through wave curves and dot patterns. Finally, the theme ‘Resonance of Life’ is inspired by ‘plane’ element. It integrates the natural forms, flowers and light patterns and creates a retro and warm atmosphere through natural gradient colors. This study applies the formative characteristics of Yayoi Kusama's works in the design of bedding products to provide the artistic values for consumers and meet the personalized lifestyle of modern consumers. Besides, it enhances the brand competitiveness on the design of bedding products and offers differentiated products in the market. In addition, this study brings the new inspiration to the design of bedding products and it will play an important fundamental role in the future design practice and theoretical research.
