This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the construction of the 3rd Hangang Bridge, now Hannam Bridge, focusing on technical, historical, and policy perspectives, and examines its influence on Seoul’s urban structure and transportation system. During the 1960s, rapid industrialization and urbanization triggered a population surge in Seoul, creating urgent demand for expanded infrastructure to address traffic congestion and housing shortages. As the city was divided by the Han River, bridge construction became one of the strategies for connecting urban areas and supporting the development of Gangnam within the broader metropolitan framework. The 3rd Hangang Bridge, linking Hannam-dong and Sinsa-dong, reflected strategic choices aligned with long-term planning goals and national development policies. The project was designed by Dongsung Engineering, built by Hyundai Construction, and managed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Its completion coincided with the opening of the Gyeongbu Expressway, together contributing to subsequent national-level investment in Gangnam. These changes interacted with land readjustment and infrastructure expansion, which gradually stimulated residential and commercial growth. The bridge’s construction highlighted the role of transportation infrastructure within urban planning at the time, rather than representing a single decisive cause. By tracing the background and development process of the 3rd Hangang Bridge, this study provides insights applicable to contemporary urban planning and infrastructure strategies.
