Purpose: This study examined the association between sex and the perceived severity of sexual harassment on film and television production sets among South Korean production crew members. It further investigated the mediating role of perceived employment instability and the moderating role of prior experience of sexual harassment. Methods: Data were collected from South Korean film and television production crew members. The analysis examined differences in the perceived severity of sexual harassment by sex and tested whether perceived employment instability mediated the association between sex and perceived severity. It also examined whether prior experience of sexual harassment moderated the association between perceived employment instability and perceived severity of sexual harassment. Results: The results showed a significant difference between male and female respondents in the perceived severity of sexual harassment on production sets. The association between sex and perceived severity of sexual harassment was mediated by perceived employment instability. However, prior experience of sexual harassment did not moderate the association between perceived employment instability and perceived severity of sexual harassment. Conclusions: The findings suggest that perceptions of sexual harassment on film and television production sets may vary according to workers’ circumstances and the context in which such experiences are interpreted. In particular, perceived employment instability emerged as an important mechanism associated with differences in the perceived severity of sexual harassment. These findings highlight the importance of considering employment conditions when examining perceptions of sexual harassment in precarious production environments.
