초록

Lately, Korean research studies of topics relating to Japan appear to have broken away from the stabilized plateau that was maintained throughout the 2000s and seem to be entering a stage of uneasy contraction. The great earthquake in eastern Japan in 2011, along with the radioactive leakage from the Fukushima nuclear plant has contributed to the sudden decline of the Japanese language market in Korea. In addition, the rapid rightist progression of Japanese society and the conflict between the Korean and the Japanese accounts of history has cast a dark shadow over research of Japan in Korea. Especially, the conflict between the governments of Korea and Japan has served to reinforce the negative attitudes of each country’s citizens toward the other, and considering the situation in the area surrounding the Korean peninsula it continues to be difficult to find any solutions. By taking all of these factors into consideration, it would not be an overstatement to say that Korea’s study of Japan has reached a period of transition. This paper aims to examine Korea’s current efforts to study Japan by considering Korean efforts to study the Japanese language, and to simultaneously think of possible new directions of study going forward into the future.
