Aspects of Death Rite Material Culture and Cultural implications -Focusing on the case study of each cultural area of shamanism-

초록

The purpose of this study is to identify the categories of shamanic death rituals terms and structures, focusing on case studies by cultural region, and to analyze aspects of material culture and the cultural implications of death inherent in them. The rites of death have concepts such as Ogu, Saenam, Xiwang(Ten kings), Haewon, Washing, Ancestral, Haewon, and Paradise. The various terms of death rites reflect the purpose of Cheondo(Leading the dead to the other world), the concept of Gods, the contents of rituals, the space for death, etc. The purpose of Cheondo means guide and rebirth to the other world, the concept of Gods means Xiwang’s judgment, the ritual content to provide the foundation for the resurrection in the other world through purification, and to represent jail, the same meaning as hell. Death rituals have different names and ceremonial structures from region to region, and symbols are also distinctive. However, some could see that intersection between regions was formed or the universality of symbols and contents was revealed. Based on this universality and specificity, I examined the aspects of material culture by classifying categories such as communication with the live and the dead, the journey and boundary of the world and the continuous existence of the dead. I analyzed cannonical messages in religious rituals are classified as universality in that they have eternal persistence, and self-referential messages are classified as specificity by substituting symbols that appear within the concept. Looking cultural regional death rituals through the material culture, the essential purpose of Korean view of the death is the eternal cycle of birth based on the present. Saenam means the rebirth, and it is more closely related to the rebirth in this world than the another world. It aspires to return to the present world as much as to eternal life in another world. This implies the cultural notion of death not only shamanism but also inherent whole Korean culture. This study is valuable in that it tried to identify the ideas of death by region and the general idea of death in Korea through materials.
