초록

This study analyzes the impact of cultural distance between partners on incremental and radical innovation performance in the international strategic alliance. In addition, we identify whether differences in the industrial knowledge base between partners represented by differences in the partnership between the intra-industry and between inter-industries moderate the effect of the independent variable. Based on the theoretical discussion, the hypothesis we set forth are as follows: Hypothesis1:In the international strategic alliance, the longer the partner's cultural distance, the more positive (+) impact on incremental innovation performance. Hypothesis2:In the international strategic alliance, the longer the partner's cultural distance, the more negative (-) impact on radical innovation performance. Hypothesis3:If the industries in which alliance partners participate are different (in the case of the inter-industry alliance), the positive effects of cultural distance between international strategic alliance partners and incremental innovation performance is likely to be weakened. Hypothesis4:If the industries in which alliance partners participate are the same (in the case of the intra-industry alliance), the negative effects of cultural distance between international strategic alliance partners and radical innovation performance is likely to be weakened. To test our hypotheses, we use 364 international strategic alliances contracted by 139 domestic KOSDAQ listed companies as a sample for a period of 4 years from 2009 to 2012. The statistical results suggest that the longer the cultural distance from the alliance partner, the more it has a positive effect on incremental innovation and the negative effect on radical innovation.
