Effects of Quadriceps Femoris Fatigue on the Complexity of Postural Control

초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of quadriceps femoris fatigue on postural control. The study participants consisted of 10 healthy adult males. The experimental task involved maintaining a one-leg stance as statically as possible for 30 seconds on the dominant leg under conditions that did not induce quadriceps femoris fatigue (normal) and conditions that did induce quadriceps femoris fatigue (fatigue). Quadriceps femoris fatigue-inducing exercises were performed for each repetition under the fatigue condition, and the experimental task was measured three times. Following quadriceps femoris fatigue-inducing exercises, it was observed that the variability of postural control increased as the standard deviation (SD) and velocity (VEL) of the center of pressure (COP) in the medial-lateral (ML) direction increased. Moreover, it was found that the complexity of postural control decreased as the multi-scale entropy area (MSE Area) of COP in the ML direction decreased and as the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA(α)) index of COP in the ML direction increased. The results regarding the complexity of the center of pressure following quadriceps femoris fatigue provide additional information beyond the variability of postural control, including non-linear information such as the movement structure of the postural control system, rather than simply linear information about simple movements as suggested in previous studies. This study is expected to contribute to subsequent research on the relationship between quadriceps femoris fatigue and postural control complexity.
