A Study on the Illustration Design of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms based on Defamiliarization Theory

초록

The contemporary field of Twenty-Four Solar Terms illustration design faces the dual challenge of preserving the essence of traditional culture while creating visual representations that are both timely and creative. Existing research focuses on symbolic representations and traditional painting methods, and lacks empirical strategies to promote audience engagement and cultural resonance in contemporary visual media. This study proposes a creative process that subverts conventional representations and builds a new visual language by systematically applying the theory of defamiliarization to the design of Twenty-Four Solar Terms illustrations, with the intentional separation of familiar objects to break the automatization of perception and ensure the subjectivity of the recipient, thereby evoking new experiences of interest and wonder. Grounded in defamiliarization theory, a mixed-method approach—combining literature review, practice-based research, cross-analysis, case studies, and the Analytic Hierarchy Process was employed. The research aims to enhance the visual impact and cultural dissemination of solar term illustrations, providing both theoretical and practical references for the modern reinterpretation of traditional culture. Ultimately, it contributes to expanding design thinking, fostering public recognition of cultural identity, and offering new pathways for creative cultural transmission.
