A Study on the Current State of Words and Foreign Characters in the Local Administration’s Press Release

초록

This study aims to analyze the current state of public language use and suggest ways to improve it, based on the analysis of press releases produced by a local administration from July to October 2019. We analyzed the use of public language based on two criteria. One is whether to use unfamiliar terms such as difficult Sino-Korean word and loanword, and the other is how frequent foreign characters are exposed. The result of this study shows that unfamiliar terms are being used in an average of 28 percent of press releases per month. There were occasions difficult Sino-Korean word and loanword being used regardless of refined words. Sometimes, officials temporarily invented unfamiliar terms. The result of this study also shows that foreign characters were used 4,560 times during the investigation period, and the top five words most frequently used accounting for 33 percent of the total foreign text exposure ratio. This study’s results can be used not only to draw up guidelines for preparing press releases but also to help select a list of vocabulary words for refined words.
