대규모 공연에서의 무대 넘버링 실행과 의미: 2018 평창동계올림픽 개막식 안무 사례를 중심으로

This study explores the implementation and significance of stage numbering in large-scale performances, focusing on the choreography and production process of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony. Under the theme “Peace in Motion,” the PyeongChang Olympics embodied harmony and peace through the convergence of tradition and modernity, humanity and technology. In particular, the artistic program “All for the Future” was analyzed to examine how stage numbering was designed and applied in practice. Employing a qualitative case study combined with action research, the study utilized literature, official documents, video materials, and field notes. The analysis revealed that stage numbering functioned not merely as a spatial reference system but as a core mechanism enhancing performance efficiency, artistic precision, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The step-by-step rehearsal process—from Taereung Training Center to KINTEX to PyeongChang Stadium—demonstrated an organized rehearsal structure based on stage numbering. Furthermore, in scenes integrating LED gates, drones, and media art, stage numbering strengthened visual rhythm and narrative coherence. Ultimately, stage numbering operated as (1) a choreographic structuring tool, (2) a collaborative communication system, and (3) a cultural medium visualizing national identity and branding. This study highlights stage numbering as a performative and production strategy that simultaneously advances the artistry and operational efficiency of mega-event performances.
