A Study on the Historical Transformation and Contemporary Design Pathways of Traditional Chinese Incense Burners

초록

This study explores the evolution and contemporary reinterpretation of Chinese incense burners. As core artifacts of incense culture, they have embodied ritual, religious, literati, and aesthetic functions since the pre-Qin era. Shifts in material, form, and function mirror broader changes in cosmology, social order, and aesthetics. Using literature review, image analysis, and historical periodization, the study defines five developmental stages and proposes an interactive framework of material, function, and form. Results show a trajectory from bronze ritual vessels to modern materials, from sacred implements to lifestyle objects, and from symbolic mountain imagery to minimalist design. Four contemporary design pathways are outlined: material reinterpretation linking tradition with modernity, functional expansion toward healing and lifestyle, formal translation preserving cultural memory, and cultural revitalization through a “material–symbol–experience” system. The research provides theoretical and practical insights for reactivating traditional artifacts and advancing design approaches to intangible cultural heritage.
