Characteristics of Inclusive Design and Its Meaning in the Future Society

초록

Background With threatening signs to the sustainability of society, modernity begins to lose its position and societal trust as the symbol of development. This uncertainty from damage of belief results in reflexivity about present-day modern society. Though some models were tried, such as universal design and, green design pursuing more social profits, the traditional design approach still focuses on financial profits. This means more efforts to shift the design system are needed. Accordingly, in terms of finding an alternative for the future society, this study aims to shed new light on the value and explore the necessity of inclusive design. Methods This research reviewed relevant literatures concerning inclusive design and future trends. By reviewing papers searched through RISS on inclusive design, first, the perceived concept and discussion foci in the domestic design domain were identified. Then, in order to obtain basic knowledge, the background, origin, major terms of inclusive design were investigated. Next, based on the fundamental concepts of inclusive design, distinctions were drawn between inclusive design and universal design, which have been regarded in the same light. Then, from the theoretical inclusive design characteristics, some possibilities of an inclusive approach were explored as proactive solutions for problems of future society. Result Diverging from the theories of Normalization and Social Role Valorization, inclusive design and universal design have different perspectives, with practical and ideal ethics respectively. The practical perspective of inclusive design molds its main characteristics, such as real use, inclusivity and accessibility, and the WINIT model. The philosophical background and theoretical concepts show potentialities as solutions to future societal problems practically and ethically. According to some future studies, aged society, risk society, and hyper connected society are predicted as sides of the future. These sides have innate conflicts such as senior welfare vs. financial burden, equality drive vs. vulnerable social group, corporate social responsibility vs. financial burden. The raised dilemmas are related to ethics vs. economics. In this point, inclusive design could be a solution through supportive product design for productive welfare, the re-establishment of effective and efficient design, and the practical feasibility of corporate ethical responsibilities Conclusion As the status of modern society is weakened, reflective approaches are sought in both academia and industry. However, traditional industrial design is still devoteds to industrialization, one of the driving forces forming modern civilization. Thus, this study explores inclusive design based on characteristics as an alternative to shift the design system. This study has meaning in introducing inclusive design to the domestic design academia lacking relevant studies and furthermore providing an opportunity to discuss it as a necessary condition for the future society.
