초록

This study serves as a preliminary investigation into how mean length of utterance(MLU) relates to both age and gender of speakers. We investigated MLU in a group of 1,959 typically-developing children and juveniles, ages 5-19 years. We analyzed each subject's MLU and its relevance with speaker's age and gender. Multiple regression was conducted to explore the extent to which each variable was related to MLU independent. Results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) MLU increased with the growth of age but the rate of increase diminished after the age of 9 years. (2) MLU in female group was higher than male group. (3) The multiple regression analysis has shown that age is more important in estimating variance in MLU than gender. The result of this study will contribute to the common use of MLU as a diagnostic measure.
