This study aimed to investigate the effects of polyvinyl alcohol as a thickening agent on the physical thermal and mechanical properties of foamed geopolymers incorporating municipal solid waste incineration fly ash. Flowability porosity thermal conductivity and compressive strength were measured and the influence of PVA content was quantitatively evaluated. With the incorporation of PVA the viscosity of the geopolymer mortar increased resulting in a reduction in flowability. As the PVA content increased the reduction in flowability became more pronounced and the mixture with the highest PVA content exhibited a 15.82 % decrease in flowability compared to the control mixture. Due to the increased viscosity the movement of air bubbles was restricted and the escape of bubbles to the exterior was minimized leading to an increase in porosity of up to 3.26 %. As the porosity increased the thermal conductivity decreased noticeably and a significant reduction of 22.5 % in thermal conductivity was achieved compared to the control mixture. Overall this study is expected to provide fundamental data on the role of PVA in self foamed geopolymers incorporating municipal solid waste incineration fly ash. © Fédération Internationale du Béton (fib) – International Federation for Structural Concrete.
