Textual Reconfiguration and Generic Variation in Kim Eun-sook’s Dramas -A Comparative Study of The Heirs and The Glory-

초록

This study compares Kim Eun-sook’s two television dramas, The Heirs and The Glory, to examine how the core narrative resources of class, violence, and romance—along with the linguistic and visual devices mediating them—are textually reconfigured within the constraints of genre. The Heirs reduces class violence to a matter of personal deficiency and resolves it through melodramatic suturing, whereas The Glory intensifies it as a structural issue and constructs an ethic of retribution. In both works, romance and violence intersect; yet in the former, violence functions as a narrative device that anticipates romance, while in the latter, romance operates as the language of a strategic alliance that enables revenge. Also, whereas The Heirs foregrounded a Cinderella fantasy, The Glory demonstrates a reversal of subjectivity by allowing the female protagonist to exercise agency through her use of power. This mechanism of repetition and variation shows how the writer’s narrative resources are reconfigured in ways that respond to the contemporary structure of feeling and popular desires, revealing a shift in social affect from romantic fantasy toward a desire for justice and retribution. The significance of this study lies in its analysis of narrative continuity and change through a cross-genre comparison of works by the same writer. Such an analysis provides a concrete case that illustrates how popular narratives interact with social realities and generate new discourses.
