Assessing the impact of future climate on building energy performance with downscaled weather data in Korea

This study aims to evaluate the impact of climate change on building energy demand and indoor thermal comfort in Seoul and to assess the mitigation effects of passive and active retrofits. Hourly future weather data were generated by combining the IPCC SRES A2 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios with a morphing technique to capture different levels of warming or uncertainty. Energy simulations using the DOE reference office building show a 66% increase in cooling demand and a 75% decrease in heating demand by the 2080s. Retrofit measures reduced cooling energy use, and Fanger’s Predicted Mean Vote (PMV)-based analysis indicated improved indoor thermal comfort, with the annual percentage of hours within the comfort range increasing from 45% to 53%.
