A Study on Exploring the Meaning Generation Structure of Spatial Experience in Nature-Based Popular Music Festivals : Focusing on In-depth Interviews with Korean Participants at the Fuji Rock Festival

초록

This study aims to exploratively analyze how audience experiences in nature-based popular music festival spaces form structures of meaning generation, using the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan as a case study. Drawing on Greimas’s theoretical framework, it explores the process of meaning formation in festival spaces in a structural manner. To this end, spatial texts—including official maps, stage layouts, circulation structures, and visual materials of the Fuji Rock Festival—were analyzed, and in-depth interviews were conducted with Korean participants who had attended the festival at least twice. In the analysis process, Greimas’s actantial model was additionally employed to analyze participants’ experiential narrative. The findings show that spatial experiences at the Fuji Rock Festival unfold as narrative trajectories of audience experience within a decentralized spatial structure grounded in the natural environment and a mobility-oriented mode of engagement. Through repeated participation and the accumulation of memory, five core value codes were identified: personal ritual, intentional deviation, voluntary discomfort, temporary solidarity, and annual self-reset. These results exploratively suggest that nature-based popular music festival spaces function not merely as venues for performances but as sites of meaning generation where audience experiences and memories are accumulated, offering theoretical implications for spatial and experience in nature-based festivals. However, as this study is limited to a single case targeting Korean repeat participants, generalization of the findings is restricted, and future comparative studies involving participants of diverse nationalities and multiple festival cases are needed.
