The Korean Babyboomers as New Seniors: Their Attitudes and Perceptions about Life After Retirement and Their Content Needs for Successful Transition

초록

The current study conducted a focus group investigation with 4 groups of Korean babyboomers(10 males & 10 females). The results indicated that Korean babyboomers as new seniors were aiming an independent life with stable economic base. They viewed themselves as relatively young, healthy and socially capable and thus looked for roles they could serve in the society. They all pointed out that the negative climate about aging and seniors needs to be overcome. Women interviewees showed concerns about their spouses and suggested that more social and educational programs should be furnished for male babyboomers who haven’t had proper chances to develop social relationships outside their work. The focus group discussions also examined babyboomers’ informational needs in adjusting to their retirement. First, they wanted to see more of their peers who have been successful in transition of retirement, showing role models for them. Women babyboomers in particular addressed the needs for social, cultural, and family adjustment programs for male babyboomers. Lastly, they expressed that babyboomers are interested in obtaining health related information and leisure related information.
