Research on the Development of Textile Design Utilizing Techniques from Mondrian’s Neo-Plasticism

초록

Neo-Plasticism is an art movement that was influenced by cubism and theosophy to eliminate elements of representing nature and arrive at pure abstraction, characterized by the use of vertical and horizontal lines, primary colors (red, yellow, and blue), and neutral colors (black, white, and gray) as basic elements to compose geometric scenes. The works of this period have an asymmetrical but harmonious and balanced composition, which is associated with the genre of European and Russian abstract painting in the 1920s. This artistic trend later influenced many art movements such as Bauhaus, decorative arts and Opu art in Germany, and promoted the development of non-figurative art in the 20th century, and had a wide impact on painting, sculpture, craft, architecture, fashion and other fields. With the increasing aesthetic sensibilities of today’s consumers, the demand for unique textile designs is on the rise. This has led to the need for designers to be more creative and artistic in their designs. There is a shift away from traditional decorative functions and toward an emphasis on artistry, centered on aesthetics and user needs. Piet Mondrian’s Neo-Plasticism, as one of the important art movements in the early 20th century, is famous for its simple geometric forms, limited colours and asymmetry. This movement has had a profound impact on modern design and provided rich inspiration for textile designs. The purpose of this study is to systematically analyse the characteristics of Piet Mondrian’s Neo- Plasticism works, and to develop creative and artistic textile designs by applying these characteristics, for It contributes to the development of the textile design market, while maintaining practicality and adding artistic value to meet the needs of consumers. In addition, this study also proposes new designs through a variety of resources of textile design to help the textile designs industry. The scope of there search was to present textile designs for apparel, integral, and fashion accessories by selecting the theories and techniques of Neo-Plasticism: geometry, tricolor, neutral color, and asymmetry. In addition, the students understood the artistic aspects of Neo-Plasticism and discovered creative ideas to apply it to textile design. In particular, the textile designs were presented focusing on geometry, tricolor, neutral color, and asymmetry expression techniques. The research method is to investigate and analyse past research papers, academic journals, Internet websites and other publications in related fields at home and abroad, and to gain an in-depth understanding of the performance skills of Neo-Plasticism. At the same time, in order to present textile designs for different purposes, Illustrator and Photoshop software are used to present the final design. The results of the study on the development of textile designs for different applications using the works of Mondrian Neo-Plasticism led to the following conclusions. First of all, Textile design for apparel shirts, with the theme of ‘cross’, creates a sense of stability and visual diversity through the asymmetrical grid structure composed of vertical and horizontal lines of the three primary colours represented by Piet Mondrian, and expresses strong emotions through the harmony and contrast of colours. Secondly, the Textile design for interior mural wallpaper with the theme of ‘Bright’ is based on the characteristics of Piet Mondrian’s Neo-Plasticism works. It uses vertical and horizontal black lines to divide the geometric area, and emphasizes the rhythmic layout and formal language independence through the vivid colour contrast of the three primary colours and black and white. shoes with the theme of ‘Fullness’ emphasizes the details of the vertical and horizontal lines in Piet Mondrian’s works, and integrates the geometric shapes of the three primary colours to increase vitality and visual effects. It achieves a subtle balance through asymmetrical composition and guides the eyes of consumers. Therefore, the textile design developed by this research is not only important in the field of fashion, interior decoration and fashion accessories textile industry, but also can make new contributions to many design-related fields.
