A Conceptual Study for Prediction of the Floating Behavior of Metallic Particle

Metallic particle was generated inside the Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) due to incorrect assembly process or mechanical operation. During normal operation, the influence of the electric filed causes the metallic particle to float over the conductor, resulting in partial discharge and dielectric breakdown. It is very important to prevent insulation accidents by predicting the floating height of metallic particle. However, the shape and size of metallic particle very diverse, and the floating height varies depending on the type of voltage. Previous studies had analyzed the movement or partial discharge characteristics of metallic particle through experiments. Also, the movement of the metallic particle was performed only through simulation, and were not consistent with the experimental results. Therefore, in this paper, a conceptual study for prediction of the floating behavior of metallic particle. The floating height and lift-off voltage of the metallic particle were investigated according to the shape, size and voltage type. The floating height of metallic particle were simulated by Boundary Element Method (BEM), and the results of the BEM and the experiment were consistent. It is found that lift-off voltage and floating height of the metallic particle could be predicted without conducting experiments.
