초록

The purpose of this study is to compare the notions of death and the belief system of other religions based on the data obtained through synchronic and diachronic approach to interpret the multivalency represented in shamanic death ritual material culture on cultural historical basis. Religious rituals not only reflect the times of the day, but also grow and develop over generations by embracing the cultural values of the society and the belief systems of various religions. The death rite of shamanism has long been continued in Korean culture, and has grown in deep cultural historical notions of death and interaction with other religions. Therefore, the influence of the cultural value of death inherent in a society's culture on material culture was examined in the context of time, spatiality, and culture of death. This is the intention to examine the values of death in a society in the cultural historical background. In Korean culture, Buddhism and Confucianism influenced on the notions and the rituals of the memory and mourning for the dead as well as shamanism. The perspective of death in society affected by the context and space of death produces an idea of abnormal death. Symbols reflecting such cultural values prepared for rituals are differentiated from those of normal death. The influence of other religions on shamanism also discussed because culture and religion grew and developed in mutual influences. Confucianism and Buddhism have a great influence on Korean view of death, so the view of death of these two religions are not different from that of Koreans. Symbols given to materials, like the stage of cultural transformation, can be newly created, changed, and disappeared. This semantic system not only contains the contents of the time, but also embodies images that have been created and transformed by cultural elements of the society throughout the ages. In this context, shamanism was influenced by Buddhism and Confucianism, which led to changes in the form of religious ideas and rituals. On the contrary, the ideas of different religions were projected from each other. In this study, we looked into the cultural value of death, an essential task in human life, focusing on material culture. It is valuable to interpret various death notions of shamanism through the analysis of the multivalent meaning inherent in material culture and reconsider the meaning of death in Korean culture considering the cultural historical basis.
