초록
This study examined the impact of upward social comparison among users of Social Networking Services (SNS) on the fear of social exclusion. In particular, it explored the roles of self-monitoring and self-expression in this relationship and investigated whether such influences differ by gender. To this end, the study targeted Chinese SNS users with a total sample size of 588 individuals. The research findings indicate the following: Firstly, the upward comparison of SNS users had a positive impact on the fear of social exclusion. Secondly, self-monitoring and self-expression exhibited positive mediating effects on the relationship between upward comparison and the fear of social exclusion. Thirdly, the upward comparison of SNS users had a positive impact on the fear of social exclusion through the mediating roles of self-monitoring and self-expression. The study results examining gender differences revealed variations in the impact of upward comparison on the fear of social exclusion between males and females. Overall, females showed a greater impact compared to males, suggesting that females have a higher likelihood of fear of social exclusion. Moreover, males demonstrated a more direct impact of fear of social exclusion through upward comparison compared to females. Males showed a significant mediation effect of self-monitoring on the fear of social exclusion. Females, on the other hand, played a distinct role in the relationship between self-expression, upward comparison, and the fear of social exclusion.
