A Semiotic Study of the Otome Game Focusing on <Love and Deepspace>

초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the text of the otome game <Love and Deepspace> from a semiotic perspective and to examine the aspects of meaning generation. As the proportion of female players in the gaming industry increases, the influence of female-oriented games is also growing. Otome games are a representative genre designed for female players, notable for their market size and cultural impact. Otome games set player experience goals based on interactions rooted in romance, and game signs are centered around this theme. This study analyzes six types of characteristics: physical signs, character signs, visual signs, auditory signs, narrative signs, and UI signs, specifically in the context of the otome game <Love and Deepspace>. These textual signs create an interpretive framework that blurs the boundaries between reality and the virtual world to maximize a kind of emotional interaction based on romance. This provides players with an immersive experience as if they are actually experiencing romance. Players share their interpretive frameworks through social media and gaming communities, sometimes transforming into content producers focused on secondary creations. This fosters a common interpretive framework and gaming culture that encompasses game developers, players, and the game itself.
