This paper aims to measure the total factor productivity (TFP) of private terrestrial broadcasting companies in the world to compare Korean companies to others in OECD countries in terms of productivity. To achieve this, translog stochastic production functions were estimated using stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) methods for 17 private broadcasters from 10 OECD countries using data from 2001 to 2007. TFP for each company was calculated from the estimated 'technical efficiency' and 'technical change'. Major results are as follows: firstly, most of the private terrestrial broadcasting companies show the increase of their TFP. This increase turns out to come mostly from the increase of technical change. secondly, the growth rates of TFP for MBC and SBS turn out to be average among the sample. The figures are 2.0% for MBC and 1.4% for SBS. According to the analysis, for MBC and SBS to increase their TFP, they need to improve their technical efficiency. Lastly, as a shortcoming of this study, it should be mentioned that sales data instead of value-added data was used for the output data.
