If today we are able to know the existence of Bartosch’s work, it is thanks to a copy discovered in 1976. The reason why his work has to be considered as part of cartoon history can be easily understood through the single analysis of . In this purpose we will first provide basic information about the author and his work before analyzing its framework. The most significant part of this study is undoubtedly the last one, which suggests the perspective that we need to adopt in order to esteem the value of this work. What can be immediately noticed by looking at this work is the differentiation of its storyline and graphics from the work’s original, Frans Masereel’s engraving . Though Bartosch initially intended a faithful interpretation of Masereel’s work, he progressively adapted it to the specificity of the cartoon medium, which consequently gave a whole new result. The causes that pushed Bartosch to remodel the story and graphics are concerned with the new techniques he invented. He certainly tried to redefine these two elements in a way that could highlight best his techniques. With that being said, if we consider that cartoon history is no other than the history of inventions of new techniques, assuredly Bartosch did invent a totally unprecedented work using soap bubbles, light and a glass plate. Moreover, the world his techniques try to depict is far too poetic, meditative and philosophical to be thoroughly articulated through language. It definitely reveals that cartoon"s expressiveness does not simply consist in entertainment and laugh, but can be a meditation on human life itself. It is in these various aspects that Bartosch’s becomes a significant masterpiece and artist that we should remember.
