초록

According to the Korean Social trends(2020), it was seen that majority of people feared the stigma of getting infected with COVID-19 more than the fear of being infected. This study analyzes the headlines of news reports of major daily newspapers during the first year of outbreak. Results showed that 66.5% of the healines analyzed in this study used expressions associated with stigma, and this pattern appeared around 60% through the entire epidemic period. Most frequently used stigma factors were Peril(53.6%), Labeling(28.9%), Responsibility(16.2%), and Mark(1.3%). In particular, the patterns of stigmatization related to COVID-19 were concentrated on specific groups(e.g., Shincheonji, Itaewon, churches) without considering the contexts such as changes in the overall quarantine policy and government’s messages. Practical and policy implications are discussed.
