초록
As fake news spreads, research on its social impact and countermeasures has increased, particularly regarding the third-person effect (TPE). While previous studies emphasized political orientation, few have empirically examined TPE differences based on political identity. This study addresses this gap by grouping respondents by political orientation and introducing political knowledge as an alternative to political efficacy. It explores TPE differences between progressives and conservatives and the role of political knowledge in predicting TPE. A survey measured TPE, political identity strength, message desirability, political knowledge, support for fake news regulation, and media literacy education. T-tests and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used for analysis. Results showed significant TPE differences by political orientation. Progressives perceived greater influence on opposing groups, while conservatives showed no clear pattern. In the traditional model, key predictors were significant only for progressives, and political efficacy had no impact. The alternative model, incorporating political knowledge, showed better fit but failed to predict TPE for either group, suggesting the need for additional explanatory variables. However, TPE differences between political groups remained consistent, reinforcing the study’s findings.
